AIDS Complicates Breastfeeding Advice in Africa

Mother's milk or formula? Health groups are divided over which to recommend to HIV-positive mothers in sub-Saharan Africa after a study challenged the conventional wisdom that it was best for such women to rely exclusively on formula. In a region where formula-fed infants are six times as likely to die as their breastfed counterparts, the study raised imposing ethical questions. Should HIV positive mothers be advised and assisted to exclusively breastfeed? Or, despite the potentially decreased risk, should the focus be on reducing transmission by encouraging exclusive formula feeding where that is possible? Read full story here. Discuss it here.

BF driver convicted of 3 charges

RAVENNA, Ohio - A woman who belonged to an obscure religious sect was found innocent Friday of child endangerment for breast-feeding her baby while driving, but was convicted of three lesser charges. Catherine Nicole Donkers, 29, was found guilty of violating child-restraint laws, driving without a valid driver's license and fleeing police while on the Ohio Turnpike in May. Full story here.

A Tucson husband and wife who left their 4-month-old son in their truck for at least an hour while they lunched are loving parents who made a mistake, their lawyer said Friday. "What happened here was a terrible mistake that, believe it or not, can happen," Stephen M. Weiss said. "As far as we're concerned, there was no criminal conduct." Full story.
